The short version

Read the question first. Listen for who wants what and why. Write a few keywords, not sentences. If you miss something, let it go and catch the next one.

What each part is really asking

PartThe question to keep in your head
Problem solvingWhat's the problem, and what do they decide to do?
Daily-life conversationWhat does each person want?
Information and newsWhich fact, order of events or cause was stated?
Discussion and viewpointsWhose opinion is this, and what's their reason?

A routine for one listen

  • Before the audio: scan the question and options for names, numbers and words like but, instead or later.
  • During: note keywords and arrows, like problem → fix. Don't try to write it all down.
  • After: answer straight away. Cross out options that change the subject or that the speaker rejected.
  • Later: for every miss, write down why. Vocabulary? Lost focus? A trap option? Too slow?

The trap that catches most people

The wrong options usually use real words from the audio. A plan the speaker mentioned, then dropped. A time that was the old time. A reason someone else gave. If an option sounds familiar, check it's the answer to this question, not just something you heard.

How to practise

Use audio you haven't heard before, and play it once. Our free practice set works this way, and so do the full mocks. Replaying a clip to check is great for learning, but do it after you've answered, not before.

Questions

Should I write full sentences?

No. Short notes leave your attention on the audio.

Do the questions come before or after the audio?

It depends on the part. Practise with the real format so the order feels normal.

Is there a video part?

Yes. CELPIP describes a discussion part with visual information. Watch body language and setting, but answer from what's said.
