The short version
If you're 18 to 54, IRCC needs level 4 or higher in listening and in speaking. Both CELPIP-General and CELPIP-General LS count. One strong skill can't make up for the other, so you need 4 in both.
General or LS?
| CELPIP-General | CELPIP-General LS | |
|---|---|---|
| Skills tested | Listening, reading, writing, speaking | Listening and speaking |
| Length | Just under 3 hours | About 1 hour 10 minutes |
| Counts for citizenship | Yes | Yes |
| Counts for Express Entry | Yes | No |
If you only need citizenship, LS is the shorter test. If you might also apply for permanent residence through Express Entry, General covers both.
How to prepare for LS
CLB 4 is a reachable level, but don't walk in cold. Remember that speaking is recorded, not a conversation. Both feel strange the first time.
- Listening: practise hearing a clip once, then answering.
- Speaking: use the speaking timer with the real prep and speaking times. Record yourself and listen back.
- Do a full listening part and two speaking tasks in one sitting, so the format feels normal.

Is CELPIP-General LS accepted for citizenship?
Yes. IRCC lists both CELPIP-General and CELPIP-General LS.
Do I need reading and writing for citizenship?

I'm over 54. Do I need a test?
